Late Deyda Hydara, a veteran Gambian journalist, who co-founded The Point, an outstanding independent newspaper, was shot dead in 2004 by unknown assailants.
The Gambia government denies responsibility, but its inept investigation, if any, into the mysterious murder of Deyda is frowned upon by Gambian journalists and the unresolved murder is among hosts of other hostilities against the media, resulting to a frosty relation between Government and media.
Following the recent rare government-media dialogue aimed at smoothening relations, the GPU-USA has added voice to the strident calls for government to ‘deploy all available law enforcement resources towards resolving Deyda’s mysterious murder.’
“Justice for his [Deyda’s] family is long overdue,” says the body governing US based Gambian journalists, a great number whom have fled the country and are exiled in the face of growing attack on Gambian media.
