A civil suit filed against the University of The Gambia by a former staff has been adjourned to April 12, 2011.
The case was supposed to commence on Monday at High Court in Banjul, but Justice Mahoney was said to be attending a meeting and could not preside over the case.
The Daily News is yet to confirm neither the nature of the claim nor the name of the claimant, despite reasonable efforts. But we have been reliably informed that the claimant is a former staff of the UTG.
“I am not in the position to tell you anything about that,” Mr Jenung Manneh, the University Secretary told The Daily News.
Mr Manneh was present at the court alongside lawyer Bola Carrol, who we have been informed is the legal representative of the University of The Gambia.
The gathering, including some journalists dispersed after confirming that the trial would not proceed.
Meanwhile, reports have been also alleging academic conflict at the country’s highest learning institution with lecturers grouping themselves into sections in an apparent infighting.
According to Gambian online media, Dr Gombo Ali Touray, Director of Information, and International Affairs was suspended after he made allegations of lack of accountability, transparency and unfair treatment of Gambian lecturers by Prof Kah, the vice chancellor.
Unconfirmed reports also suggested that the office of the President has instructed the Personal Management Office (PMO) to probe into Mr. Touray’s complaint against the University, and Prof. Kah.
Prof Kah was contacted for his side of the story, but he is said to have travelled abroad.
Dr. Omar Jah Jr., deputy vice chancellor who received Prof. Kah’s telephone when The Daily News telephoned yesterday, said he is not aware.
